The continuous evolution of learning technologies combined with the changes within ubiquitous learning environments in which they operate result in dynamic and complex requirements that are challenging to meet. The fact that these systems evolve over time makes it difficult to adapt to the constant changing requirements. Existing approaches in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) are generally not addressing those issues and they fail to adapt to those dynamic situations. In this chapter, we investigate the notion of an adaptive and adaptable architecture as a possible solution to address these challenges. We conduct a literature survey upon the state of the art and state of practice in this area. The outcomes of those efforts result in an initial model of a Domain-specific architecture to tackle the issues of adaptability and adaptiveness. To illustrate these ideas, we provide a number of scenarios where this architecture can be applied or is already applied. Our proposed approach serves as a foundation for addressing future ubiquitous learning applications where new technologies constantly emerge and new requirements evolve.
Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird ein hochsprachenprogrammierbares System zur schritthaltenden Vollbild-Interpretation natürlich beleuchteter Szenenfolgen im Videotakt vorgestellt. Im einzelnen werden folgende Teilmodule und Subsysteme beschrieben: eine hochdynamische, pixellokal autoadaptive CMOS-Kamera mit ca. 120 dB Helligkeitsdynamik (20Bits/Pixel) ein hochsprachenprogrammierbarer Systolic Array Prozessor (für die pixelbezogenen Verarbeitungsmodule) im PCI-Kartenformat, samt optimierendem Compiler, Simulator und Emulator Systemprozeßgerüste unter Linux auf den für die Echtzeit-Anwendungen eingesetzten Hostrechnern (z.B. DEC/Alpha oder Intel/ Pentium)eine prototypische Anwendung zur bildverarbeitungsbasierten Eigenbewegungsbeobachtung (Translationsrichtung, Eotationsraten)eine prototypische, automotive Anwendung zur schritthalt enden Detektion und Kartierung des Straßen- und Spurverlaufs unter partieller monokularer 3D-Rekonstruktion, sowie prototypische Anwendungen zur Klassifikation verkehrsrelevanter Hindernisse (Verkehrsteilnehmer)
Coming out of the labs, the first robots are currently appearing on the consumer market. Initially they target rather simple application scenarios ranging from entertainment to home convenience. However, one can expect, that they will capture more complex areas soon. These robots will have a higher and higher level and a broad range of functional competence, and will collaborate and interactively communicate with their human users. All this requires considerable cognitive abilities on the robot’s side and appropriate man-machine interaction technologies. Apart from further development of individual functions and technologies it is crucial to build and evaluate fully integrated systems. This paper describes our approach to construct a robotic assistance system. We present experience with an integrated technology demonstration and the exposure of the integrated system to the public.

This chapter describes our research efforts related to the design of mobile learning (m-learning) applications in cloud-computing (CC) environments. Many cloud-based services can be used/integrated in m-learning scenarios, hence, there is a rich source of applications that could easily be applied to design and deploy those within the context of cloud-based services. Here, we present two cloud-based approaches—a flexible framework for an easy generation and deployment of mobile learning applications for teachers, and a flexible contextualization service to support personalized learning environment for mobile learners. The framework provides a flexible approach that supports teachers in designing mobile applications and automatically deploys those in order to allow teachers to create their own m-learning activities supported by mobile devices. The contextualization service is proposed to improve the content delivery of learning objects (LOs). This service allows adapting the learning content and the mobile user interface (UI) to the current context of the user. Together, this leads to a powerful and flexible framework for the provisioning of potentially ad hoc mobile learning scenarios. We provide a description of the design and implementation of two proposed cloud-based approaches together with scenario examples. Furthermore, we discuss the benefits of using flexible and contextualized cloud applications in mobile learning scenarios. Hereby, we contribute to this growing field of research by exploring new ways for designing and using flexible and contextualized cloud-based applications that support m-learning.
This chapter describes our current research efforts related to the contextualization of learners in mobile learning activities. Substantial research in the field of mobile learning has explored aspects related to contextualized learning scenarios. However, new ways of interpretation and consideration of contextual information of mobile learners are necessary. This chapter provides an overview regarding the state of the art of innovative approaches for supporting contextualization in mobile learning. Additionally, we provide the description of the design and implementation of a flexible multi-dimensional vector space model to organize and process contextual data together with visualization tools for further analysis and interpretation. We also present a study with outcomes and insights on the usage of the contextualization support for mobile learners. To conlcude, we discuss the benefits of using contextualization models for learners in different use-cases. Moreover, a description is presented in order to illustrate how the proposed contextual model can easily be adapted and reused for different use-cases in mobile learning scenarios and potentially other mobile fields.
Sicherheitskritische Mensch-Computer-Interaktion ist nicht nur derzeit, sondern auch zukünftig ein äußerst relevantes Thema. Hierbei kann ein Lehr- und Fachbuch, wie dieses, immer nur einen punktuellen Stand abdecken. Dennoch kann der Versuch unternommen werden, aktuelle Trends zu identifizieren und einen Ausblick in die Zukunft zu wagen. Genau das möchte dieses Kapitel erreichen: Es sollen zukünftige Entwicklungen vorausgesagt und versucht werden, diese korrekt einzuordnen. Das ist an dieser Stelle nicht nur durch den Herausgeber, sondern durch Abfrage bei zahlreichen am Lehrbuch beteiligten Autoren geschehen. Neben einem Ausblick auf Grundlagen und Methoden werden dementsprechend auch sicherheitskritische interaktive Systeme und sicherheitskritische kooperative Systeme abgedeckt.
We present a study on 3D based hand pose recognition using a new generation of low-cost time-of-flight(ToF) sensors intended for outdoor use in automotive human-machine interaction. As signal quality is impaired compared to Kinect-type sensors, we study several ways to improve performance when a large number of gesture classes is involved. We investigate the performance of different 3D descriptors, as well as the fusion of two ToF sensor streams. By basing a data fusion strategy on the fact that multilayer perceptrons can produce normalized confidences individually for each class, and similarly by designing information-theoretic online measures for assessing confidences of decisions, we show that appropriately chosen fusion strategies can improve overall performance to a very satisfactory level. Real-time capability is retained as the used 3D descriptors, the fusion strategy as well as the online confidence measures are computationally efficient.
Nowadays, teachers and students utilize different ICT devices for conducting innovative and educational activities from anywhere at any time. The enactment of these activities relies on robust communication and computational infrastructures used for supporting technological devices enabling better accessibility to educational resources and pedagogical scaffolds, wherever and whenever necessary. In this paper, we present EDU.Tube: an interactive environment that relies on web and mobile solutions offered to teachers and students for authoring and incorporating educational interactions at specific moments along the time line of occasional YouTube video-clips. The teachers and students could later experience these authored artefacts while interacting from their stationary or mobile devices. We describe our efforts related to the design, deployment and evaluation of an educational activity supported by the EDU.Tube environment. Furthermore, we illustrate the specific teachers’ and students’ efforts practiced along the different phases of this educational activity. The evaluation of this activity and results are presented, followed by a discussion of these findings, as well as some recommendations for future research efforts further elaborating on EDU.Tube’s aspects in relation to learning analytics.
While more and more nuclear installations facing the end of their lifetime, decommissioning financing issues gain importance in political discussions.
The financing needs are huge along the Uranium value chain. Following the polluter pays principle the operator of a nuclear installation is expected to accumulate all the necessary decommissioning funds during the operating life of its facility. However, since decommissioning experience is still limited,
since the decommissioning process can take several decades and since the time
period between the shutdown of a nuclear installation and the final disposal of radioactive waste can be very long, there are substantial risks that costs will be underestimated and that the liable party and the funds accumulated might
not be available anymore when decommissioning activities have to be paid.
Nevertheless, these financing risks can be reduced by the implementation of transparent, restricted, well-governed decommissioning financing schemes, with a system of checks and balances that aims at avoiding negative effects
stemming from conflicts of interests.
This article describes the current state of our research on anthropomorphic robots. Our aim is to make the reader familiar with the two basic principles our work is based on: anthropomorphism and dynamics. The principle of anthropomorphism means a restriction to human-like robots which use version, audition and touch as their only sensors so that natural man-machine interaction is possible. The principle of dynamics stands for the mathematical framework based on which our robots generate their behavior. Both principles have their root in the idea that concepts of biological behavior and information processing can be exploited to control technical systems.
As service robotics research advances rapidly, availability of objective, reproducible test specifications and evaluation criteria and also of benchmarking is more and more felt to be desirable in the community. As a first step towards benchmarking, in this paper we propose a formalization of tests - exemplified for domestic grasp&place tasks. The underlying philosophy of our approach is to confront the robot system in a black-box manner with requirements of a “rational customer”, and characterize the performance of the system in an objective way by the outcomes of a test-suite tailored to this scenario. A formalized single test description consists of a clear and reproducible specification of the robot’s task and the full context on the one hand, and a number of figures which objectively characterize the test result on the other hand. We illustrate this methodology for the domestic assistance scenario.
CoRA is a robotic assistant whose task is to collaborate with a human operator on simple manipulation or handling tasks. Its sensory channels comprising vision, audition, haptics, and force sensing are used to extract perceptual information about speech, gestures and gaze of the operator, and object recognition. The anthropomorphic robot arm makes goal-directed movements to pick up and hand-over objects. The human operator may mechanically interact with the arm by pushing it away (haptics) or by taking an object out of the robot’s gripper (force sensing). The design objective has been to exploit the human operator’s intuition by modeling the mechanical structure, the senses, and the behaviors of the assistant on human anatomy, human perception, and human motor behavior.
In this work methods are described, which are used for an individual adaption of a dialog system. Anyway, an automatic real-time capable visual user attention estimation for a face to face human machine interaction is described. Furthermore, an emotion estimation is presented, which combines a visual and an acoustic method. Both, the attention estimation and the visual emotion estimation based on Active Appearance Models (AAMs). Certainly, for the attention estimation Multilayer Perceptrons (MLPs) are used to map the Active Appearance Parameters (AAM-Parameters) onto the current head pose. Afterwards, the chronology of the head poses is classified as attention or inattention. In the visual emotion estimation the AAM-Parameter will be classified by a Support-Vector-Machine (SVM). The acoustic emotion estimation also use a SVM to classifies emotion related audio signal features into the 5 basis emotions (neutral, happy, sad, anger, surprise). Afterward, a Bayes network is used to combine the results of the visual and the acoustic estimation in the decision level. The visual attention estimation as well as the emotion estimation will be used in service robotic to allow a more natural and human like dialog. Furthermore, the human head pose is very efficient interpreted as head nodding or shaking by the use of adaptive statistical moments. Especially, the head movement of many demented people are restricted, so they often only use their eyes to look around. For that reason, this work examine a simple gaze estimation with the help of an ordinary webcam. Moreover, a full body user re-identification method is described, which allows an individual state estimation of several people for hight dynamic situations. In this work an appearance based method is described, which allows a fast people re-identification over a short time span to allow the usage of individual parameter.
Systems for automated image analysis are useful for a variety of tasks and their importance is still growing due to technological advances and an increase of social acceptance. Especially in the field of driver assistance systems the progress in science has reached a level of high performance. Fully or partly autonomously guided vehicles, particularly for road-based traffic, pose high demands on the development of reliable algorithms due to the conditions imposed by natural environments. At the Institut für Neuroinformatik methods for analyzing driving relevant scenes by computer vision are developed in cooperation with several partners from the automobile industry. We introduce a system which extracts the important information from an image taken by a CCD camera installed at the rear view mirror in a car. The approach consists of a sequential and a parallel sensor and information processing. Three main tasks namely the initial segmentation (object detection), the object tracking and the object classification are realized by integration in the sequential branch and by fusion in the parallel branch. The main gain of this approach is given by the integrative coupling of different algorithms providing partly redundant information.
Derzeitige Projekte am Institut für Neuroinformatik in Bochum beschäftigen sich mit der Analyse von Straßenverkehrsszenen mittels Computer Vision [12]. Dies impliziert, wegen der durch die natürliche Umwelt aufgestellten Randbedingungen, hohe Anforderungen an die zu entwickelnden Algorithmen. Im speziellen wird versucht, Verkehrsteilnehmer aus Videobildern zu extrahieren und die so gewonnenen Objekthypothesen weiter zu attributieren (z.B. Objektklasse, Abstand, Geschwindigkeit, Gefahrenpotential hinsichtlich der beabsichtigten Eigentrajektorie etc.), um im Hinblick auf den Einsatz in Assistenzsystemen in Fahrzeugen eine möglichst genaue Beschreibung der Umwelt zu erreichen. Nicht nur die große Vielfalt der unterschiedlichen Umweltszenarien, sondern auch das hohe Maß an Sicherheit, das die gestellte Aufgabe erfordert, bedingen ein breitbandiges und flexibles Gesamtsystem [6]. Ein Lösungsvorschlag wird im folgenden behandelt.
Ziel des Verbundprojektes APFel (Projektlaufzeit: 01.01.2010 ‐ 31.03.2014)war eine zeitlich vorwärts‐ und rückwärtsgerichtete Lokalisation von Personen innerhalb eines Kameranetzwerkes aus sich nicht überlappenden Kameras in Hyperechtzeit zu ermöglichen. Einsatzbereiche dieses Szenarios sind kritische Infrastrukturen wie Flughäfen und Flugplätze. Zunächst fokussierte das Projekt APFel auf die Lokalisation einer einzelnen Zielperson. Weiterführend wurden die entwickelten Verfahren auf die Analyse von Gruppen erweitert, um Personen als Teil einer Gruppe lokalisieren zu können.
Sensing and processing of multimedia information is one of the basic traits of human beings. The development of digital technologies and applications allows the production of huge amounts of multimedia data. The rapidly decreasing prices for hardware such as digital cameras/camcorders, sound cards and the corresponding displays led to wide distribution of multimedia-capable input and output devices in all fields of the everyday life, from home entertainment to companies and educational organisations. Thus, multimedia information in terms of digital pictures, videos, and music can be created intuitively and is affordable for a broad spectrum of users.

Film archives—particularly those storing video material on all kinds of news items—are important information sources for TV stations. Each TV station creates and maintains its own archive by storing video material received via satellite and/or internet on tapes in analogue and/or digital form. It cannot be predicted in advance which of this archived material will actually be used. Thus all material received must be catalogued and stored. On average only a small percentage of the material stored is actually used. Due to the increase in data volumes the cost of maintaining such repositories and retrieving particular stored items has become prohibitive. To-day digital videos are increasingly replacing analogue material. Digital videos offer the advantage that the can be stored in distributed databases and then be transferred without loss of quality to the transmitting station. Such digital archives can be made accessible to many TV stations, thus spreading the maintenance cost. Individual stations can retrieve only the material they actually need for particular news casts. In this paper a grid architecture for distributed video archives for news broadcasts is proposed. A crucial aspect of such a grid approach is that advanced methods for retrieving data must be available.
Kaum ein sicherheitskritisches System hat eine so große Verbreitung bei Privatpersonen gefunden wie das Automobil. Seit seiner Erfindung hat es eine rasante Weiterentwicklung erfahren, von einer rein mechanischen Maschine zu einem System, bei dem heute die meisten Innovationen auf elektronischen Komponenten basieren. Dazu zählen insbesondere Fahrerassistenzsysteme, die helfen sollen, komfortabler und sicherer am Ziel der Fahrt anzukommen. Wo einst z. B. der Tempomat einfach über die Einstellung einer festen Geschwindigkeit gesteuert wurde, sind heute bereits einzelne Systeme deutlich umfangreicher und das Zusammenspiel longitudinaler und lateraler Automatisierung führt zu einem Anstieg der Komplexität. Die sichere Bedienung des Fahrzeugs muss jedoch im Vordergrund stehen, kann ein Fehler doch schnell bis hin zu tödliche Folgen haben. In diesem Kapitel werden psychologische Grundlagen vorgestellt und auf die Herausforderungen für die Entwicklung von HMIs im Fahrzeug angewandt. Konkrete Umsetzungen von aktuellen Fahrzeugen bis hin zu Forschungsarbeiten werden betrachtet, ebenso wird auf den Entwicklungsprozess und Nutzerstudien eingegangen.
Fahrer benötigen zur sicheren Steuerung ihres Fahrzeugs im Straßenverkehr eine Reihe von Anzeigen. Viele Funktionen zur Fahrerassistenz benötigen Eingaben des Fahrers. Wie auch in den vergangenen Jahren die Funktionsvielfalt gewachsen ist, sind auch Anzeige und Bedienelemente gestiegen. Im vorangegangen Kapitel wurde bereits die Begrenztheit der menschlichen Leistungsfähigkeit bei der gleichzeitigen Aufnahme und Interpretation von Informationen dargelegt. Die Herausforderung an das HMI im Fahrzeug ist durch die gewachsene Anzahl und auch Komplexität der Systeme enorm gestiegen. In diesem Kapitel sollen zu ausgewählten Funktionen die Anzeige und Bedienkonzepte vorgestellt werden, von einfachen Anzeigen bis zu Strategien für das autonom fahrende Fahrzeug. Dabei wird ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die sicherheitsrelevanten Aspekte gelegt.
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) become more and more popular. These course formats are typically highly flexible and attract large groups of learners from heterogeneous backgrounds. So far research in this area concentrating on success factors for low dropout rates and high satisfaction on the side of the learners in MOOCs is scarce. In this chapter, we describe experiences of a large online course offered to students of two large German universities. Based on theory drawn from a social psychological perspective on the relevance of social interaction for learning, we describe the background, structure, and specific elements of the MOOC-like course. We outline evaluation results of both small group collaboration (in workshops) and mass interaction (via forum and wiki usage) as well as results of the general evaluation of the overall course concept. We argue that the specific mixture of small and large group interaction as well as teacher- and learner-generated content is especially promising with regard to satisfaction, learning outcomes, and course completion rates.
Starting with the automatic gear change, the operation of a vehicle becomes more and more abstract. In the future, we could control vehicles with single, simple commands. For such a maneuver-based vehicle control system, we investigate a head-up display design in a workshop. The aims are to identify common and distinct features of various display designs through mock-ups. First results show that different sizes of GUI elements are preferred by different states. The preferred position of GUI elements in the head-up display (HUD) is the central bottom area. We found two major interface design styles: static interfaces (all elements visible) with fixed layout and dynamic interfaces (only relevant elements visible) with fixed or adaptive layout.
The virtual classroom continues to grow, but it is becoming more and more the norm, and it is fundamentally different from the vocational students at the Indonesian university. With the promised benefits of the virtual classroom, many challenges and difficulties come in the implementation. Although there are already successful design principles for virtual classrooms that support organizations in overcoming the challenges, the approach to implementing the design principles of virtual classroom at the vocational higher education in Indonesia is still lacking. In this study, we aim to answer the research gap and used the design sciences research by interviewing the lecturers to design the solutions. The proposed design approaches were implemented in a course and evaluated with students from two different groups. Overall, the evaluation of the proposed approaches shows1 significant results as an indicator of the benefits of the implementation of a virtual classroom for vocational students in Indonesia.
